Simplify3d configuration for Makerbot Replicator 2 with Heated Build Platform (HBP).

You can download my Simplify3d 4.1.2 Profile here :
In Simplify3D got to File -> Import FFF Profile and select my .fff file.

Or follow the steps below to configure it yourself.

Manual Configuration Instructions

Configuration instructions on how to setup Simplify3d with a modified Makerbot Replicator 2 with Heated Build Platform (HBP).

During installation of Simplify3d when you have the option to select your printer, choose Makerbot Replicator 2.
If you missed this step you can set the 3d printer at a later stage by navigating to the following tab (Warning: the following action will delete any previous setup printer processes!):
  1. Help -> Configuration Assistant
  2. Select Printer -> Makerbot Replicator 2
  3. Finish

Firmware Configuration

Configure the firmware to match the 3d printer:
  • Tools - > Firmware Configuration -> General tab
  • Select profile: Makerbot/Sailfish Firmware
  • Navigate to: X3G tab and under GPX configuration:
  • Machine Profile: Replicator 2 with HBP
  • Save

Configure process to support HBP

I found some good information on how to modify the Simplify3d process to work with a HBP on 3d printing blog. The starting script below does have an additional change to make sure the purge actually happens next to the print bed. Documented on this page is how I have configured Simplify3d (Process 1).

Temperature - Add Heated Build Platform

Under the Temperature tab we have to add a temperature  controller for the Heated Build Platform:
  • Click: Add Temperature Controller
  • Name: Heated Build Platform (HBP)
  • In the overview section check that the radio button: "Heated build platform" is selected
  • And the checkbox "Wait for temperature controller to stabilise before beginning build" is checked

Scripts

Under the Scripts tab we have to update the starting and ending scripts to add support for warming up and cooling down the Heated Build Platform. I marked the lines I modified in the scripts below (expand accordion to see the scripts).

Replicator 2 with HBP - Ending script - Simplify3d 4.1.2

G-Code

Under the G-Code tab is an option to automatically update the firmware configuration. We want to make sure it's always in the state we want. Enable "Update Firmware Configuration" if it isn't already and set the following:
  • Firmware type: MakerBot/Sailfish Firmware
  • GPX profile: Replicator 2 with HBP
  • Baud rate: 115200

Save Process

Now you have saved your template process with HBP support I recommend cloning this process and modifying you cloned processes for different materials and print speeds. By giving your processes good names with meaningful information you should be able to switch between processes pretty quick without having re-configure them every time.

On windows you can clone the process by selecting the process to clone and using the keyboard shortcuts:
  • Ctrl + c
  • Ctrl + v

Configure process to support different materials and print settings

Simplify3D has a great video on how to modify the Process1 so it contains different profiles for different materials and print speeds etc all within the one process. Check it out.

ABS preheat settings

To reduce the change off a blocked nozzle update the preheat temperature on the Makerbot Replicator 2  to 245°C.
