3D Printing

3D printing is an emerging technology used more and more in industry. I own a modified Makerbot Replicator 2 that I use for prototyping purposes and to get to know the advantages and limitations of this technology hands on. 

Modifications are made to the Replicator 2 to improve print reliability and to be able to print a wider range of materials. 
The following improvements have been made:

• Sailfish firmware instead of Makerbot firmware (improves print quality)
• Spring loaded extruder (improves reliability)
• Aluminium carriage (required to print at higher temperatures)
• Low friction MK8 nozzle ( improves reliability)
• Roller bearings instead of bushings (less friction)
• Aluminium arms (reduces vibrations and shaking, won't sag or warp under heat, print at higher speeds)
• Removable heated build plate (Expanded material capabilities)
• Printer enclosure (improves dimensional accuracy and reduces warping)

• Aluminium Idler kit ( improves reliability)
